Load time: why every second costs customers

A slow page loses visitors before it is even read. Especially on a phone, on the move, on mobile data: someone who waits hits back and takes the next result. The good news is that the causes are almost always the same three.

What Google measures

Among other things, Google judges pages by the Core Web Vitals. Three values that show up in every measurement:

  • LCP: how long it takes for the largest visible content to appear. Good is 2.5 seconds or faster.
  • INP: how quickly the page reacts to taps and clicks. Good is under 200 milliseconds.
  • CLS: how much the content still jumps around while loading. Good is a value below 0.1.

These values feed into ranking — but above all they describe quite precisely what feels sluggish or jumpy to a visitor.

The three most common bottlenecks

Images at original size. A photo straight from the camera is quickly 5 MB and gets displayed at thumbnail size on a phone. Scaled properly and served as a modern image format, it often comes down to under 200 KB — looking exactly the same.

Ballast from templates and plugins. Ready-made themes load fonts, icon sets and scripts of which the page uses three per cent. Every extension adds code of its own. Twenty plugins are twenty reasons to be slow.

Slow hosting. The cheapest shared plan puts you on a server with hundreds of other sites. You notice exactly when visitors arrive.

Serving images properly

  • scale them to the width they actually appear at
  • save them as WebP instead of an uncompressed camera JPEG
  • load images below the fold only once someone scrolls there
  • set width and height so nothing jumps while loading

What you can check yourself

Open Google PageSpeed Insights, enter your address and look at the mobile section. What matters is not the score and its colour, but the list underneath: it names the biggest single items, usually in the order worth tackling them.

Speed is not a detail for technology enthusiasts. It is the first impression, before anyone has read a single word.

How we handle it

BNK Web builds pages without a site builder: no theme ballast, no plugin chain. Images are scaled and compressed before upload, fonts ship with the page instead of coming from a third-party server, and testing happens on a real phone, not only in a narrow browser window.
